We The 99% People’s Summit is committed to protecting your personal information in line with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This notice explains how and why we collect, use, and protect your data.
1. Purpose of Collection We collect your information for the sole purpose of: • Organising and managing the We The 99% People’s Summit; • Coordinating activities, communications, and processes that arise from the Summit; • Ensuring inclusive participation, accessibility, and effective follow-up with attendees and partners; • Meeting legal, reporting, or accountability requirements related to the Summit and its outcomes.
2. Information We Collect Depending on your engagement, we may collect: • Personal details: name, contact information, demographic data (e.g., region, organisation, role); • Participation details: event registrations, dialogue contributions, surveys, and feedback; • Media: photographs, video, or audio recordings where you have consented or chosen to participate in public sessions; • Technical data: where applicable, information necessary to support online participation.
3. Legal Basis for Processing • Under GDPR: processing is based on your consent (Article 6(1)(a)) and our legitimate interests in organising inclusive civic events (Article 6(1)(f)). • Under POPIA: processing is justified by your consent, our legitimate organisational purposes, and where required to comply with the law.
4. How We Use and Store Data • Your data will only be used for the Summit and related follow-up activities. • We implement reasonable organisational and technical safeguards to protect against loss, misuse, or unauthorised access. • Data will not be shared with third parties unless required by law or with your explicit consent.
5. Data Sharing Where partners or service providers support the Summit, they will only process personal information under strict confidentiality and in compliance with GDPR and POPIA. Data may be transferred cross-border only where adequate protection measures are in place.
6. Data Retention We will retain your data only for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined above. After this period, data will be securely deleted or anonymised.
7. Your Rights You have the right to: • Access, update, or correct your information; • Withdraw your consent at any time; • Request deletion or restriction of processing of your data; • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) or a relevant Data Protection Authority (EU) if you believe your rights have been infringed.
